Time & Location

30 Oct 2024, 11:45 – 14:00

FarmED, Station Rd, Shipton-under-Wychwood, Chipping Norton, OX7 6BJ

About the Event

In 2014, James was approached by a group who wanted to grow hemp on his farm. Now named Hempen, the cooperative grow hemp on contract both for the oilseed and for CBD.

Hempen was the first organic hemp grown in the UK, and hemp was grown on Path Hill Farm every year until 2018 when their licence was revoked, but have luckily reinstated their licence. As pioneers in the organic hemp industry, James and Hempen really had to learn everything from scratch, including varieties, timings, seedbeds, rotations, harvesting and storage, not to mention a largely hostile governance. There have been some successes and some failures, and although we have gained some experience there is a very long way to go before it becomes a reliable crop. Join us for this Lunchtime Talk where you will hear all about James' experiences on his journey. From the technical to the emotional side of trying to grow this fascinating, and somewhat addictive, plant: Cannabis!

About the speaker:

James is the tenant of Path Hill Farm on the Hardwick Estate in South Oxfordshire at the southern end of the Chilterns. The farm is mainly grassland with a suckler herd, and a small arable operation.

Please arrive at 11:45 am. The talk will start at midday, and lunch will be served at 1:00 pm.

After the talk, you will get a freshly prepared, nutritious lunch from the FarmED cafe where you will be able to network with other guests.
