Planting for Birds and Buildings

Today Celene and Danny have been planting pyracantha and holm oak to shelter the FarmED buildings and provide cover for birds. 

Fifty two metres of multi-variety pyracantha will produce attractive orange, red and yellow berries and crucially will provide a thick, prickly hedge to entice fledgling house sparrows. House sparrows have been given an amber conservation status due to declining numbers but we hope nesting pairs will make use of the luxury bird boxes which have been incorporated into the gable ends of the FarmED building. 

The fifty metre outer hedge of holm oak will provide further nesting and a windbreak and the evergreen leaves, together with the maple, birch, cherries and hawthorn, will  create interest and a long season of colour around the FarmED buildings.
