About the Event

Do you know why we can produce four times more grain per acre today than we could a century ago? Would you recognise ridge and furrow in the landscape?

Why are farmers now being paid to help the environment?

Eighty years ago, Kate’s grandfather, George Henderson, wrote a book about farming called The Farming Ladder.  Although agriculture has changed a lot since then, many farmers are now looking back into history to find ways to increase biodiversity and improve soil health.

Kate will guide you through a short history of UK agriculture, looking at how the landscape and food systems we see today have evolved and what we can learn from our ancestors.

This talk will include a presentation and a Q+A session.

About the speaker:

Kate Henderson is FarmED's Agriculture Lead, she leads many of the courses and farm walks and is one of the very friendly faces of FarmED. After studying Agricultue at Harper Adams University, she went on to travel and work on farms in New Zealand before coming back to the UK to work on a large farming estate. Kate's years of experience in farming and her lineage has lead her to be at FarmED.

Please arrive at 11:45 am. The talk will start at midday, and lunch will be served at 1:00 pm.
