About the Event

Help FarmED build our first Compost Toilet during a series of volunteer workshops!

You will be tasked with helping us create a wood-framed structure, as well as toilet infrastructure. You can learn new woodworking skills that can be transferable for other projects if you are looking to gain more experience in carpentry.

You will be guided by Tim Hope-Cobbold, a composting loo expert, as he takes you through the process. Tim has spent the last 2 years helping to build the wonderful ‘Chippy Flower Farm’, constructing all the Polytunnels and fitting out the ‘Flower hut' and ‘Studio’. Being a huge fan of composting, he designed and built the composting area for the farm which included a functional, practical composting loo for the team and their visitors. He is in the process of setting up his own vegetable-growing business and building a new compost loo to go with it.

Tim will be writing up a 'guide to building’ a compost loo with all the details of materials, cutting guide, equipment required, links to resources, photos etc. This will be made available for all volunteers to take home, so you can have a guide for the future.

You will also hear all about the benefits of using humanure, and how this can help close the loop on our waste system, and understand where the final product will go.

Rough timings for the volunteer opportunities are 10:00 am - 12:30 pm. A bowl of soup will be available after you have finished all your hard work!

Spaces are limited to ensure effective working groups. Book onto any of the listed dates below:

11th December  - Materials & Equipment & Frame Assembling

13th December - Lavatory Internals & Infrastructure

18th December - Cladding and Roofing
