About the Event

Do ewe want to gain a basic level of knowledge about sheep? This course is perfect for anyone who is thinking of getting some sheep or who would like to learn more about this fascinating animal. There are so many things to think about when considering keeping sheep. Do you have enough space, what forms need to be filled in and how do you decide which breed to choose?

One this one day course you will learn how to get holding and flock numbers, how much space and what fencing you will need, how to spot early signs of ill health and how to handle sheep correctly. We will also discuss the terminology around sheep and how there are many regional differences in the words that are used. For instance, there are more than ten words for a female sheep!

We will go through 'The sheep year' so you know what to expect, look at the tools and equipment you may need and where to get them. We'll also discuss the finished product; are you looking at keeping sheep for meat, for their fleeces or as woolly lawnmowers to keep an underused field in check?

The course will be a mixture of indoor and outdoor sessions enabling you to put what you've learnt into practice, including practical demonstrations from our experts. We will be welcoming guest speaker, Karl Franklin (@the_pretend_farmer on Instagram), who will explain his journey into the industry and you'll have the chance to ask plenty of questions.

You will go away with a strong foundation of knowledge and feel more confident in embarking on your sheep farming journey.

The day will include refreshments and a seasonal lunch from the FarmED kitchen.
