About the Event

World Habitat Day - Autumn Nature Walk with Conservationist, Nick Patel

To mark World Habitat Day, conservationist Nick Patel leads a farm walk to look at the range of habitats at Honeydale Farm.

‘Autumn is a bountiful season for observing nature as there’s lots on the move, from migratory birds to mammals looking for food and shelter in the hedgerows and field margins,’ says Nick.

With Nick’s expert guidance, you’ll be exploring the meadows, woodland and wetland areas, discovering everything from fungi to rodents and maybe some birds of prey.

‘Good habitats are not always what you think they are and I am passionate about changing people’s perception,’ says Nick. ‘People look at an intensively farmed wheatfield and think that’s helping biodiversity when messy scrubland is often much better. As far as nature is concerned, messy is good.’

The walk will last approxitately 2 hours and will be followed by a delicious and nutritious pizza made with ingredients from the FarmED kitchen garden.

Suitable for all ages. Bring binoculars if you have some and make sure to wear sturdy footwear for walking around the farm.

Nick Patel, Biography

A reclaimed quarry site with reed bed systems, wet wood habits and wildflower meadows, it’s part of the mitigation for a neighbouring waste site. Nick trained at various RSPB reserves and is particularly passionate about wetland habitats, wildflower meadows, grasslands and how regenerative farming can help to change perceptions about what farmers can do to make space for nature.
