How Bees Make Money

Properly looked after, honeybees can produce prodigious quantities of surplus honey.

Despite all the challenges we face from climate change and industrial farming practices, in the last two years our bees have delivered record-breaking honey crops. How can this be?

This talk will describe a light-touch management system that gives bees the freedom to get on with what they do best - gathering nectar and turning it into honey. We'll look at your main costs and how to control them. How and when to harvest honey. The do's and don'ts of preparing honey for sale. Runny, set and comb honey. Whether to sell wholesale or retail. How to develop relationships with farm landlords and retail outlets. The aesthetics and legal requirements of labelling.

This will be an interactive session and we will leave lots of time for questions and possibly a group discussion.

Tony Yarrow is one of FarmED’s beekeepers who provides honey for retail and for our cafe. As a young man Tony worked with some of the UK’s largest commercial beekeepers. Today he manages around 20 colonies producing over half a ton of surplus honey a year.

Please arrive at 11:45 am. The talk will start at midday, and lunch will be served at 1:00 pm.

After the talk, you will get a freshly prepared, nutritious lunch from the FarmED cafe where you will be able to network with other guests.
