About the Event

How buying a fleece in a Swindon parking lot led to inheriting a flock of sheep and moving to the country! Read More...

Vera Hoenen is a lifelong knitter and spinner of 20+ years. The journey of spinning led to a chance meeting and the purchase of a Cotswold fleece in a Swindon parking lot, meeting her partner, and eventually led to inheriting a flock of 60 odd Cotswold Lions and Lincoln Longwool sheep.

The obvious next step was to find a farm Vera, her partner Nick and their 4 children could move to with the sheep.

The flock has changed over the years to better fit their needs and the land they now live on, the farm they moved to happens to have the UKs first cooperatively owned wind and solar farm on it, they count and ring birds, and they give permissive access to the land to walkers and their dogs.

All things that turned out to be controversial in one way or another!

About the speaker

Vera's focus has always been on the fleeces produced by their flock and has carefully chosen various breeds for excellent fleece quality and complementary grazing habits. She firmly believes education is the key to restoring wool to its former glory and she runs workshops for shepherds and crafts people on every aspect of wool producing and processing and she started and runs the local spinners and weavers guild.
