Agroforestry - Can Trees Help Our Farming Systems?

Agroforestry is the climate-friendly land management system that integrates trees and shrubs with crops or livestock and this talk will highlight common patterns in how farmers implement agroforestry in practice. This might include how they select tree species depending on their goals, as well as different ways of thinking about agroforestry. Both practical and inspiring, Mauricio will offer useful takeaways while also giving a broader overview of agroforestry in Europe - relevant for people new to the topic and for those with more experience. 

Mauricio is a teacher and a practitioner of agroforestry in Sweden. In 2020, he established Sweden´s largest and most biodiverse test field for agroforestry. Moreover, he wrote Sweden´s first practical handbook on agroforestry in 2022.

Over the past four years, Mauricio has visited over 50 farms working with agroforestry across Europe. During these visits, he interviewed farmers to better understand how agroforestry is practiced in different contexts. As a result of this work, he wrote “Agroforestry in Europe – A Practical Handbook“, which is the first practical handbook on European agroforestry.

Nowadays, Mauricio still manages Sweden's largest test field for agroforestry and he is currently writing a handbook on the economics of agroforestry in Sweden, based largely on the data gained from the test field.
