Join us for an interactive workshop led by Compost Club expert Michael Kennard to learn what defines healthy soil, how it functions, how to improve it into a healthy growing medium and how to create our own effective and efficient composting system for differently scaled operations.

Through a variety of sessions focusing on different composting methods, including hands-on activities, microscopy sessions and a chance to look at the composting methods used around the site at FarmED, this course aims to help you explore a variety of compost systems and find the one that works best for you.

This one day course will teach you:

  • How soil functions and how we can keep soils healthy
  • Different methods of composting
  • How to compost at different scales
  • How to make the best compost possible to fit your own needs

Whether you are a garden fanatic, cook or simply keen to create a more sustainable, circular economy for your food waste at home, this course will provide you with the complete guide to turning your food and garden waste into fabulous fertiliser for your soil.

About the course leader

Michael Kennard is a Soil Association ambassador, consultant and educator specialising in regenerative agriculture and land restoration. Through his consultancy, Regenerative Soils, he works with farmers, land managers and organisations to build healthy, resilient soils using ecological principles and practical, science-based methods. He applies this method which he calls 'Soil First Farming' to his own Meliora Farm in East Sussex.

Michael offers tailored guidance on improving soil biology, structure, and fertility - alongside designing efficient site-specific composting systems that close the nutrient loop and boost microbial life. His hands-on experience and clear, engaging teaching style make him a sought-after speaker and workshop facilitator across the UK.
