Dr Lydia Smith from NIAB Innovation Farm talks to Ian Wilkinson about an old farming method of grazing wheat with sheep. The cash crop is a second heritage wheat which was sown directly into a clover understory. This understory was established with the first winter wheat.
The sheep have grazed the wheat down really quickly over the course of a morning. ‘The hope is that it will tiller (more stems/grain heads) really well and we will get a higher yield as well as suppressing weeds,’ says Ian Wilkinson.
