In our ongoing work to demonstrate options for no tillage, Hallam has spent the day with the Aitchison, direct-drilling a wheat mixture into white clover living mulch, at a sowing depth of approx 1 inch at a seed rate of 240kg/ha. The clover was sown under winter cereal in October 2019 and grazed once over the winter. We’ve tried to do this with yellow trefoil before but it was too aggressive. Timing is key. Ideally we’d have sown over the winter, or during February but it’s been too wet. A good result will be to see the wheat coming up through the clover during the next few weeks. We will be monitoring establishment and yield so keep in touch to find out what we learn.
