About the Event

Join Andy Howard of the Heritage Fruit Tree Co. to learn the theory, skills and practice of Summer Fruit Tree Pruning in order to increase productivity.

Subjects covered include: 

  • Summer pruning versus winter pruning of top fruit. 
  • Why should we summer prune?
  • How a tree grows, root stock sizes and vigour, fruit buds vs growth buds. 
  • Summer pruning of pip fruit and stone fruit. 
  • How and when to summer prune trees. 
  • How to make your own espaliers, cordon, step-over or festoon. 
  • What tools we need and how to use them. 

(Equipment for pruning and making your own espaliers will be available to buy. Including Silky saws, Okasune secateurs, turnbuckles, wire, vine eyes). 

Lunch will be provided in FarmEAT, after which you will be able to put your skills into practice in FarmED's own on-site Heritage Orchard.
