Pastured Poultry

Rearing pastured poultry can be a great regenerative enterprise. Making it work can be a challenge!   

We shall explore, with leading sustainability and animal welfare consultant Anna Heaton, the challenge of selecting, feeding and housing pastured poultry for meat and eggs in a high welfare and regenerative context.  

Join in this interactive workshop to hear more about the key practices and principles of rearing pastured poultry, and share your building designs, tips on diet and examples of processing and routes to market.  

We will hear from the following farmers: 

• Amy Chapple from Redwoods Farm who keeps both laying hens and broilers on pasture raised systems.  
• Chris Rummings from Lydiard Turkeys who's turkeys are kept in a fruit orchard, their diet includes local, regeneratively grown oats and peas, and as many windfall fruits as they can manage! 
• Ollie White from Farm2Fork who rears chickens, geese and turkeys, the poultry are moved everyday to fresh pasture and are fed organic grains

Let's see how they are making it work and learn from their mistakes.

Peer to peer workshop sessions will allow participants to share problems and solutions. Bring photos and plans of your mobile sheds, chicken tractors and turkey gobbledygos!  

By the end of the day, you leave with a plan for your next steps and a community of fellow pastured poultry keepers to bounce off.  

We will of course feed you well throughout the day with a menu featuring locally reared pastured chicken and eggs, and fresh produce from our kitchen garden.

Anna Heaton

Anna Heaton has worked internationally on animal welfare and sustainable livestock management for over 15 years and is now the Fibre and Materials Strategy Lead for Animal Materials at Textile Exchange. Textile Exchange’s key Climate+ Strategy aims to reduce the impact of the textile industry by 45% by 2030 and for animal fibres and leather this means increasing the uptake of regenerative farm management systems.

Before joining Textile Exchange Anna gained experience in working in the U.S. and other countries where she was involved in the development and ongoing management of farmed animal welfare standards programs for retailers (the Whole Foods UK 5-Step Animal Welfare Program), fashion brands and charitable organisations (Good Cashmere Standard by Aid by Trade Foundation and Animal Welfare Approved by A Greener World), as well as significant input in the standards for the UK Pasture Fed Livestock Association (PFLA) and work on standards development for Textile Exchange, Wildlife Friendly Enterprise Network, Global Animal Partnership and other businesses. Back in the UK she also used to be part of South West Farm Consultants, working directly with farmers and farmer groups on organic and regenerative land management.
