About the Event

Ruth Ozeki

Man Booker Shortlisted Author

In Conversation with Jaffé and Neale Bookshop and Café

Dicussing her new novel "The Book of Form & Emptiness" followed by book signing

6.30pm Friday 8th October

Ruth Ozeki is a novelist who met critical respect for her Booker Shortlisted " A Tale for the Time Being". She has now written "The Book of Form and Emptiness" introducing us to Benny Oh, a thirteen year old child coming to terms with the death of his Father and his Mother's hoarding obsession. Benny has the gift of hearing the voice of  every object he encounters, which is a curse and a joy. The book is set on the West Coast of contemporary USA and  gives us an insight to Ozeki's Japanese roots and Shintoism.

Ruth Ozeki addresses all the pressing themes of the twenty first century: How does man interact with the planet and how do we lead fruitful and useful lives without harming ourselves or others?

She writes with a light touch and great humour while addressing challenging topics like mass consumption and successful parenting. The novel includes a cameo role for a Buddhist monk , who very much resembles the Marie Kondo , the author of the multimillion selling "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying".

If you haven't been fortunate enough to read her works, she's best described as a mix between Haruki Murakami and Jonathan Franzen.

She has a wonderful style , an overpowering respect for the natural world and an eye for the unusual in the everyday.

This is a wonderful opportunity to hear and meet one of America's leading novelists.

"The Book of Form and Emptiness" is a must read for this year
