About the Event

Would you like to know more about the World Environment Day, established by the United Nations at the Stockholm in 1972? And would you like some practical ideas on how you can get more involved in environmental matters at a local level today?  Nigel will share his thoughts on the progress we have made since the 70’s, the priorities for individuals today and a message of hope that we can all help nature provide the ‘clean air, clean water, health food and shelter’ we need for a sustainable world. He will end by discussing the many environmental initiatives in Oxfordshire and will share some tips on how we can all look after our ‘only one earth’ better.

About the speaker:

A 50 year career managing field science projects for communities and conservation.

Born in Kenya, early encounters with the natural world led to a career in conservation as a field scientist. He read Life Sciences at the Polytechnic of Central London where he led undergraduate geographical field surveys in the Sahara, West Ethiopia, and Kenya.

He then worked at the Royal Geographical Society on field science related activities for 29 years, joining as a volunteer studying the forests of Sarawak and went on to become its Deputy Director.  He helped establish the society's Expedition Advisory Centre to encourage and fund young scientists to study the natural world – and then selected to develop the Society’s geographical research programmes in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and the Indian Ocean. As Head of the Expeditions and Fieldwork division, Nigel was involved in developing standards and training for safe and effective multi-disciplinary fieldwork and promoting the value of outdoor learning. In 2005 he joined the ‘citizen science’ NGO Earthwatch and for 10 years led the European office in Oxford and was later appointed Executive Vice President of Earthwatch International, with a global programme of over 50 international projects worldwide, focussing on biodiversity and climate change studies, working closely with volunteers, business leaders and pioneering international scientists.

Nigel, now retired, is working as a volunteer advisor and mentor with local field scientists on conservation projects in the Middle East and supporting eco-tourism activities with the Laikipia Maasai Il Ngwesi Group Ranch Conservancy in North Kenya. He is an ambassador for Earthwatch Europe, an active Honorary Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the UK point of contact for the East African Wildlife Society based in Nairobi. Recently been invited to be a Vice President of the international conservation NGO, Flora & Fauna, based in the David Attenborough Building in Cambridge. Locally he now organises the popular ‘Evenlode Geographical Lectures’ held each spring and autumn in the Chadlington Memorial Hall. He welcomes enquires from young field scientists and happy to be contacted by email. nigel@winserdialogue.com
